
The increasing prevalence of allergic disease in the Western world has led to the concept of the ‘allergic march’ to describe the evolving spectrum of disease that often begins in childhood. The use of allergen immunotherapy in children has the potential of altering the natural course of allergic disease. However, concerns regarding the safety of using this treatment in children are an obstacle to attenuating the allergic march. A cross-sectional, descriptive, questionnaire-based survey was conducted in schools in Toulouse, France, to determine the prevalence of food allergies among children in school. The first goal of the survey was to estimate the prevalence of food allergies. The second goal was to determine the main characteristics of the allergies. The questionnaires (3500) were distributed in 150 classes in eight schools. The return rate was 77.6% (2716). (more…)

Treatment of allergic diseases in childhood presents unique challenges, as both the beneficial effects and the detrimental effects of intervention(s) may last for decades and even for a lifetime. Most allergic diseases are managed in a community setting by primary care physicians, rather than in a hospital setting by allergy specialists.
