How to Survive Allergies in Spring and Summer

As a person who suffered form allergies and have a profession as family physician, I have much sympathy for those struggling with itchy, watery eyes, coughing, stuffy nose, postnasal drip, or allergies hay fever and cough. Like spring and summer that can take months, allergies patients have to find a way on how to survive in this season.

A few years ago, the obvious thing to do if you have allergy attack is to see allergy doctor for allergy medications. A thorough shower and washed after mowing will get rid off grass and pollen from skin and hair. Rinsing the nose and eyes will benefit one who had stuffy nose and eye allergies.

There are some non-prescription medicines or alternative medicines that contribute to minimize allergies impact like antihistamines, decongestants, expectorants, eye drops and nasal sprays. There are few categories of drugs where the prescription may be necessary like steroid inhalers for asthma medicine medications in particular.

Oral antihistamines are the mainstay of the treatment of allergies. The advantage of oral antihistamines is that they have the potential to help more of the symptoms in different locations and multiples symptoms: the itchy or watery eyes, runny nose, itching, hives, post-nasal drainage and cough due to draining. But yet still there are main disadvantage is that some of the drowsiness with antihistamines, including diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine and Doxylamine. Those drugs medication both work well for allergy sufferers, but it is probably more effective than loratadine, cetirizine for symptoms similar to colds.

If your allergic symptoms only a runny nose but not others, nasal spray cromolyn sodium may help you in reducing your reaction to pollen. If itchy eyes are the problem, you may try ketotifen eye drops or pheniramine included. These drugs can be used if necessary, either from exposure to pollen their reaction, and the alleviation of the symptoms reduced, as they occur.

Decongestants help a stuffy nose and rhinitis. But be careful though because some people are having problem with insomnia, anxiety, palpitations, or the use of decongestants. So be careful if you suffer from these conditions. Some patients benefit from the use of an allergic expectorant (guaifenesin), which liquefies the mucus so that it can drain more easily. Dextromethorphan, a medicine that oppresses the body’s need for cough, is an ingredient in medicines against cough counter. Only if these prescription drugs are not effective, you should consult your doctor.
